Lot 2130
LOW COUNTRIES. Gelre (Gelderland). Provincial coinage. Daalder (Silver, 42 mm, 25.90 g, 2 h), Culemborg (?), no date (circa 1555-1598). SANCTVS:CAROLVS:MAGNVS: Crowned and cuirassed half-length figure of Charlemagne to right, his right hand holding scepter over his shoulder, his left at his sword. Rev. MONE[T]A•NOVA•ARGEN•D•I•P• Lion rampant left. Davenport 8889. Delmonte 787. Rare and darkly toned. Areas of weakness abnd light scratches and a metal flaw on the edge, otherwise, very fine.

From the old stock of a late Swiss coin dealer.

The exact origin of the mint remains uncertain, though Culemborg was historically considered the most plausible candidate. This hypothesis is bolstered by the reverse legend D•I•P, interpreted as 'Dominus in Pallant', a reference to the Pallant family, who, as documented, were indeed engaged in minting coins in Culemborg during the late 16th century.
